Incoming IB Seniors for 2013-2014!
You will be required to read a book over the summer called:
Modern China: A Very Short Introduction.
The author is Rana Mitter and it presents a very brief history of China from its imperial years to present-day China. The book is available in digital for almost half of the paperback price. Depending on which you choose to purchase, it should not cost you more than $10.00
There will be an assessment in the first week of school on this text.
For the purposes of your Paper 1 training, we will only focus on Chinese events leading up to the Tiananmen Square uprising in 1989 and the Chinese government's response to the uprising. However, comprehension of the Chinese historical past, is indispensable for your training to write effectively about China under Communism. So, please read the entire little book.
I will be providing a text to each of you free of charge when we get to the Cold War, so don't buy any Cold War books. Remember, SL students and HL students take the same Paper 2, but not the same Paper 1. And SL students don't take Paper 3 so our study will be different from your SL friends.
